Presented by the Muslin Trust, this inspiring afternoon is a chance to explore the beauty, history, and contemporary relevance of Bangladesh’s most iconic heritage fabrics.
Enjoy talks by Dr Sonia Ashmore, Chair of Muslin Trust, on the historical background of muslin, Jamdani, and Bengal’s weaving heritage. Founder Trustee Rifat Wahhab will talk about how muslin was sold inside Bengal (now Bangladesh) and muslin’s impact on the wider world, and Founder Trustee Saif Osmani will discuss Muslin Trust’s work with the Victoria and Albert Museum in relation to the creation of the new forthcoming South Asia Gallery. We also hope to have a talk from designer Silmat Chisti in Dhaka on design, heritage, and contemporary practice, offering a unique perspective on how tradition and modernity meet in today’s creative landscape.
Trustee Poppy Jaman OBE will lead an interactive session demonstrating how Jamdani can be draped in a variety of ways, followed by a fun and informal catwalk for participants.
You will also be able to view examples of hand-woven Jamdani and handmade garments crafted from Jamdani.
