The phrase “Roots to Routes” resonates deeply with my life journey. Born as an Indian minority in Malaysia to Keralite grandparents who bravely migrated from the lush landscapes of Kerala before Malaysia’s independence, my narrative encapsulates a rich tapestry of cultural blending and exploration while navigating the complexities of identity. It is a tale of resilience and belonging grounded in the various stages of my journey from Malaysia to England, and ultimately to Northern Ireland.

The Roots: Kerala – The Land of My Ancestors

My story begins in the vibrant state of Kerala, known for its cultural richness and natural beauty. My paternal grandparents, envisioning a life filled with opportunity for their future, took the courageous leap to migrate to Malaysia. Their journey wasn’t merely a relocation; it represented hope, courage, and an unwavering determination to create a life for future generations.Despite being miles away from the shores of Kerala, they carried their rich traditions with them—speaking Malayalam, sharing familial stories, and imbuing our meals with the beloved spices of home. Their heartfelt commitment to preserving their heritage laid the foundation for our family’s values, ensuring that we grew up deeply connected to our Indian roots.

The Routes: Life in Malaysia and Embracing Tamil Culture

While my grandparents hailed from Kerala, my father and his siblings thrived within the Tamil community in Malaysia, infusing my upbringing with this vibrant culture. Celebrating Thaipusam, engaging in the rich rhythms of Tamil folk music, and fostering communal bonds were an integral part of my formative years. I inherited a unique blend of both Tamil and Keralite heritage—an identity that resonates powerfully within me to this day.

New Routes: Migration to England and Northern Ireland

In 2001, I took a bold step and migrated to England, embracing new possibilities while leaving behind my familiar life in Malaysia. The transition was exhilarating yet challenging, as I became a minority once again in a diverse but foreign landscape. It was during this phase that I thoroughly understood the importance of cultural identity and the need to carve out a space for myself. In 2009, my journey led me to Northern Ireland, where I’ve had the privilege of living for over 16 years now. In this beautiful corner of the world, I’ve discovered a fascinating blend of cultures that enriches the community; it has been a place where I can truly appreciate the depth of diversity while also recognising the changes that have taken place over the years.Northern Ireland feels like home to me now, with its breathtaking landscapes and welcoming people. As I navigate my role in this community, I celebrate the unique transition that has occurred in Northern Ireland, particularly how it has embraced multiculturalism and adapted over time.

A New Generation

Most significant of all, I became a parent in this vibrant region, welcoming my son into a world that embodies a fusion of cultures. He is born not only into the legacies of my Indian heritage but also to the rich traditions of the Irish, British, and Tamil cultures that have shaped our family’s existence. For him, the roots extend beyond the Indian diaspora, creating new stories in a land steeped in its own history.

Embracing My Multilayered Identity

As I navigate through life, the journey from my roots in India to my routes in Malaysia, England, and now Northern Ireland encompasses resilience and respect for diverse cultures. I carry the stories of my Keralite grandparents, my Tamil upbringing, and my experiences in the England and Northern Ireland within me. Living as a minority across various landscapes informs my understanding of unity in diversity, allowing me to advocate for inclusivity among cultures. This unique narrative is a reflection of the richness of human experiences, where we all seek a sense of belonging and strive to carve our unique paths.By sharing my story, I aim to weave connections between communities and foster dialogue about culture, migration, and the importance of cherishing our roots while embracing new pathways. I stand proud of my past and am invigorated by the future, as I continue to write my own story in this beautiful world—a world that is now enriched by the arrival of my son, who represents hope and endless possibilities.
