About the Trust

Our Mission

The South Asian Heritage Trust seeks to elevate the prominence of British South Asian history and heritage in the UK through education, arts, culture, celebration and commemoration.

Our mission is to deepen people’s understanding of the rich and diverse contributions of South Asian communities to British society, promote intercultural dialogue, and foster greater social cohesion among communities.

The trust aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Develop and deliver educational program kits for schools. 
  2. Organize and showcase arts and cultural events. 
  3. Commemorate and celebrate key historical events.
  4. Collaborate with other organizations, institutions, and individuals.
 

By pursuing these objectives, the South Asian Heritage Trust aims to foster a deeper and more inclusive understanding of British history and heritage, promote social harmony and cohesion, and contribute to a more equitable and inclusive society for all.

Our Objectives

Develop and deliver educational programs that highlight the history, heritage, and cultural contributions of South Asian communities in Britain, including workshops, seminars, and training sessions for schools, community organizations, and the wider public.

Organize and showcase arts and cultural events, such as exhibitions, performances, and festivals, that celebrate the diversity and creativity of South Asian communities and promote greater cross-cultural awareness and appreciation.

Commemorate and celebrate key historical events and figures that have shaped the South Asian experience in Britain, such as the partition of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the arrival of the Windrush generation, and the contributions of South Asian soldiers.

Collaborate with other organizations, institutions, and individuals to amplify the reach and impact of our mission and to build bridges across communities.

Our trust aims to establish a sustainable source of funding and a functional platform to support our mission. To achieve this, we will develop and implement effective fundraising strategies, seek out partnerships with donors and sponsors, and continuously evaluate and improve our operations to ensure long-term success.

To increase public access and engagement with South Asian Heritage Month by conducting focus groups and securing a patron for the trust.

Specifically, the trust aims to achieve the following sub-objectives:

  1. Conduct focus groups with key stakeholders and community members to identify opportunities to increase public access and engagement with South Asian Heritage Month.
  2. Use the insights from the focus groups to develop a comprehensive strategy that will enhance the reach and impact of South Asian Heritage Month.
  3. Secure a patron who can provide support and visibility to the trust, helping to raise awareness of the importance of South Asian Heritage Month and the work of the trust.
  4. Implement the strategy developed in objective 2, working closely with the patron and other key stakeholders to maximize the impact of South Asian Heritage Month and increase public engagement.
 

By achieving these objectives, the trust aims to increase awareness and appreciation of South Asian heritage, celebrate the diverse cultures and contributions of South Asian communities, and promote greater understanding and solidarity among all communities.

The South Asian Heritage Trust aims to collaborate with national and international organizations and outlets to develop a comprehensive program of collecting, curating, and structuring learning materials that community institutes can use to educate students about South Asian history, heritage, and culture.

Specifically, the trust aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Work with museums, archives, libraries, and other institutions to collect and curate high-quality learning materials, including primary sources, artifacts, documents, photographs, and multimedia resources, that reflect the diversity and richness of South Asian history, heritage, and culture.
  2. Develop a structured program of learning that community institutes can use to teach South Asian history, heritage, and culture to students of all ages, from primary school to university level.
  3. Collaborate with educators, curriculum developers, and community leaders to ensure that the learning program aligns with national and international standards and is accessible, inclusive, and culturally responsive.
  4. Promote the adoption and implementation of the learning program by community institutes, schools, and other educational institutions, and provide ongoing support and training to educators and learners to ensure its effectiveness and impact.

  2. Compile a range of high-quality educational resources, such as textbooks, videos, interactive tools, and lesson plans, that can support the teaching of South Asian history, heritage, and culture in schools.
  3. Promote the adoption of the syllabus and resources by schools and educational institutions, working closely with education authorities, teachers, and community leaders.
  4. Monitor and evaluate the impact of the syllabus and resources on students’ knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors regarding South Asian history, heritage, and culture, and use the findings to improve the quality and effectiveness of the materials.

The South Asian Heritage Trust seeks to explore and promote a variety of traditional South Asian games, including marble games, by organizing and hosting competitions to celebrate and preserve the cultural heritage of the region.

Specifically, the trust aims to achieve the following objectives:

  1. Research and identify traditional South Asian games that have historical, cultural, and social significance in the region, including marble games such as Goli and Goti, as well as other games such as Kabbadi, Carrom, Ludo, and Kho-Kho.
  2. Develop and organize competitions and events that showcase traditional South Asian games, including tournaments, exhibitions, and demonstrations, that can attract participants and audiences from diverse communities.
  3. Collaborate with local communities, cultural organizations, and educational institutions to promote awareness and participation in traditional South Asian games, especially among younger generations, and encourage the preservation and transmission of cultural knowledge and skills.
  4. Use digital platforms and social media to document and share the stories, rules, techniques, and strategies of traditional South Asian games, and promote cross-cultural exchange and dialogue through online and offline activities.

 

By achieving these objectives, the South Asian Heritage Trust aims to promote the cultural diversity and richness of South Asia, celebrate the legacy of traditional games, and foster greater social cohesion and understanding across communities. 

The trust is committed to preserving and promoting a wide range of traditional South Asian games, including marble games, to ensure that they continue to be enjoyed and appreciated by future generations.
