Cassette Tape Letters - Private messages catalogued and archived
Join us to learn how cassette tapes were used to communicate between the British-Pakistani community during the 1960s-80s. The TAPE LETTERS project by Wajid Yaseen provides insight into issues of migration and identity, into how language mutates and drifts, and has revealed the ingenious ways in which people adapt technology to suit their needs.

Media For All [MEFA] is a social enterprise set-up up in 2018 to help Black, Asian and ethnic minority talent thrive in the media and advertising industry and ultimately increase the ethnic diversity of the media and advertising industry in the UK.
Each month Media For All organise their MEFA Matters event, which bring together diverse professionals to unpack topics focusing on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Waheed Arian is an NHS A&E doctor and founder of the pioneering charity Arian Teleheal, which works directly with clinicians on the ground in low-resource and war-torn countries. He is also the founder of Arian Wellbeing, an innovative online mental health service which combines exercise and therapy to improve everyone’s mental well-being including of hard-to-reach communities. As an adviser, he helps global organizations and governments with the development of their healthcare and education systems.

Memory Box Led by Farzana and Saadia
Led by Farzana Qureshi (SOAS Arts and Humanities Librarian) and Saadia Gardezi (Journalist and Political Cartoonist and founder of Project Dastaan) this session was an open mic event, where a panel of speakers will share stories of migrant journeys across the globe.
Translated through images, diaries, poetry, objects, and oral and written testimonies, we will find out more about how memories shape who we are and how they connect to identity.

Watan is a pictorial-poetic book that explores and bridges the vibrant cultures of both eastern and western Punjab. It aims to capture the rupture of the Watan (homeland), the longing, the love and the connection between the people and the land. Graciela Magnoni is the author of Watan and in conversation with Navtej Purewal (SOAS Lecturer in Development Studies) to discuss how the idea for her project came to life.
Shahid Falahi spotlights British Bangladesh Arts and Talent
Shahid Falahi is one of UK’s most prominent singer, lyricist, and composer of South Asian spiritual genre, mainly in Bangla.
Shahid’s debut album ‘MUSAFIR’ was released by Soundvision in 2007.
Shahid has been involved in various creative projects and is the founder of nasheed/drama group Message with whom he released a number of albums.
In this programme, Shahid will be spotlighting some of the well known artists of this genre from the South Asian Community around the world.
Numan Azmi discusses the British Bangladeshi Community with prominent guests
Numan Azmi is a well known social entrepreneur and community activist of Bangladeshi heritage. He is a former Board member of a number of local, regional and national organisations including Govt. Advisory Board. A Member of the South Asian Heritage Month Organising Team, he is also a Co Curator of Manchester Museum’s South Asia Gallery. Here, Numan speaks to some prominent British Bangladeshi leaders about the challenges and opportunities of the British Bangladeshi community. Santosh Shah is a Nepalese chef based on London, United Kingdom, known for competing in the UK’s reality cookery TV series BBC MasterChef: The Professionals in 2020. Declared second runner up, Santosh is credited for popularising Nepalese cuisine in the UK. In 2021, Santosh once again, competed in the UK’s BBC MasterChef: The Professionals Rematch and was declared the winner. From humble beginnings on the streets of Nepal, to winning the nation’s hearts on Masterchef: The Professionals, chef Santosh Shah is putting Nepalese cuisine firmly on the map.
Ptsd to Top of the World... Hari Budha Magar
In 2017, Hari Budha Magar became the first person in the world to summit over 6000m by the first double amputee above the knee by summiting Mera Peak (6476m). Hari was born in cowshed at 2700m in a small remote village in Western Nepal. He went to school barefoot, learn to write on wooden plank with chalk stone. He was forced to married at age of 11. Hari grew up in civil was where more than 17000 people were killed. Hari joined the British Army at age of 19 in 1999 and served 15 years with The Royal Gurkha Rifles in some of the toughest places in the word.

Lavina Mehta MBE, the founder of Feel Good with Lavina, is a 44-year-old Personal Trainer, Wellness Coach and mum of three. Lavina was awarded an MBE for services to health and fitness during Covid-19.
Dr Nighat is a GP specialising in women’s health and family planning with over 15 years of experience in the NHS and private practice. She is based in Buckinghamshire and is able to consult fluently with patients in Urdu and Punjabi.
