South Asian Play Reading Group: The Wrong Bashir
The Wrong Bashir by Zahida Rahemtulla
An Ismaili family find themselves caught up in much more than a case of mistaken-identity.
Bashir Ladha, a bohemian philosophy podcaster, finds himself unwittingly thrust into the spotlight when he is chosen to assume a distinguished religious position in the Ismaili community that his parents have eagerly accepted on his behalf.
Before Bashir can object, two committee representatives are at his door to congratulate him. As the representatives start to suspect a mistake has been made, Bashir’s jubilant grandparents and relatives arrive to commemorate the honour. A farce ensues, prompting questions around whether the seemingly wrong Bashir may, in fact, be the right one.
The Wrong Bashir is a new play that premiered in Vancouver, Canada (2023) and Toronto, Canada (2024) to critically acclaimed sold-out runs.
Featuring Special Guest: Zahida Rahemtulla
This session will also be available as a hybrid in-person and online session.
WHAT IS SOUTH ASIAN PLAY READING GROUP?
Each session we will be reading a different play written by a writer of South Asian heritage. These will be a combination of new plays that are at different stages of development in addition to older legacy texts that haven’t been seen for a while and everything else in between.
It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet and connect with other creatives in a friendly and welcoming artistic environment. Many previous participants have gone on to write their own work which has received successful development as well as commissions, citing how useful Tara Theatre’s play reading group has been as a part of their professional journeys.
