From Sylhet to Spitalfields: Bengali Squatters in 1970s east London
Hear from Dr Shabna Begum, sharing her research on the Bengali squatters movement in 1970s east London, and considering how it relates to anti-racist struggles today.
Her research relies on oral history and archival research and explores how the recovery and sharing of radical community histories should be at the forefront of helping understand and navigate the persistent forms of racism today.
Dr Shabna Begum is CEO of the Runnymede Trust, the UK’s leading racial justice thinktank. She completed her doctoral research at Queen Mary University London, where she remains an honorary research fellow. She lived and grew up in Hackney and spent nearly 20 years working in a local secondary school, teaching politics.
Her book will be on sale at the event if you wish to purchase a copy to be signed by the author.
