As South Asian Heritage Month approaches, I find myself reflecting on the profound impact this vibrant culture has had on my life and artistic journey. My name is Tiah, and though I may not be South Asian by blood, I proudly embrace its rich tapestry as if it were woven into my very being.

For over a decade, South Asian artistry has been a muse for my creative expressions. The intricate patterns, exquisite embroidery, and dazzling beadwork have seeped into my art, infusing it with a depth and beauty that resonates deeply with me. Each motif tells a story, weaving together histories and traditions that span centuries.

My connection to South Asia deepened further through love. My husband hails from Pakistan, a country renowned for its breathtaking art trucks adorned with kaleidoscopic designs. These rolling masterpieces have not only captivated my imagination but also inspired me to explore more of the region. I’ve been fortunate to visit Pakistan, where I immersed myself in its art, culture, and warm hospitality.

Beyond Pakistan, my travels have taken me to Laos and Cambodia, enriching my understanding of South Asian diversity and interconnectedness. Moreover, friendships with individuals from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and other South Asian nations have enriched my life immeasurably. Together, we celebrate our shared cultural tapestry, finding joy in our differences and unity in our heritage.

Living in a country that cherishes community and diversity, I feel privileged to participate in South Asian Heritage Month for the first time. It’s an opportunity to showcase how South Asian culture permeates our daily lives here, from the flavors of its cuisine to the rhythms of its music, the grace of its dance, and the allure of its cinema.

As I eagerly anticipate this celebration, I invite others to join me in exploring and honoring South Asian heritage. Let us revel in the beauty of its art, the richness of its traditions, and the warmth of its people. Through sharing our stories and experiences, we not only preserve a legacy but also forge deeper bonds of understanding and appreciation across borders and cultures.

In commemorating South Asian Heritage Month, let us raise our voices in harmony, celebrating the mosaic of cultures that make our world a more colorful and interconnected place. Together, we honor the past, embrace the present, and inspire the future with the spirit of South Asia.

As the saying goes, “Like mother, like daughter.” In the case of creative talents, this couldn’t be more true. The influence of a mother’s creativity can leave a lasting impact on her children, shaping their own artistic endeavours and passions. In this journal I explore the profound impact my mother’s creative legacy has influenced me and how Sohavi was truly born. Roots to routes explores my late mothers life journey from birth in Kenya to India as a teenager and eventually returning to Kenya in her 20’s , to marry my father Sardar Tirlochan Singh Dhamu, to emigrate to London from Nairobi in October 1973 and live out the rest of her life.
