In his book, THE GREAT DEFIANCE: HOW THE WORLD TOOK ON THE BRITISH EMPIRE, Dr David Veevers (Lecturer in Early Modern History, Bangor University) examines the lesser-known stories of Indian Emperors, North African Corsair states, West African kings, Indigenous American chieftains, Irish lords, enslaved people and many more who resisted, held back, scuppered and often defeated British imperial progress.
