Most of us are familiar with stories of how Britain conquered the world, imposed its will, laws, bureaucracy and the railways across the globe. But what do you know of the misadventures, mishaps, and defiant resistance by locals? In his book, THE GREAT DEFIANCE: HOW THE WORLD TOOK ON THE BRITISH EMPIRE, Dr David Veevers (Lecturer in Early Modern History, Bangor University) examines the lesser-known stories of Indian Emperors, North African Corsair states, West African kings, Indigenous American chieftains, Irish lords, enslaved people and many more who resisted, held back, scuppered and often defeated British imperial progress.

Jibunnessa Abdullah (Founder & Director, Digital Museum) will be your host and presenter.

Please join us for a fascinating conversation and retelling of the history of British colonialism
