Harmonic Drums: A journey from craft to sound, language and physics
This event will offer a musical introduction to the Indian Tabla, exploring the untold story of how the physics of vibrating drum membranes inspired Sir CV Raman’s Nobel Prize-winning work in Physics in 1930.
Dr Deepak Venkateshvaran, Selwyn Fellow and Director of Studies in Physics, will discuss the unique construction and sound of the Tabla, and explain how it led Sir CV Raman to his pioneering discoveries in light scattering. The talk will also feature musical performances and introduce rhythmic composition on the instrument.
