The digital premiere is on 18 July, 2023 at 6:30 pm on the Nupur Arts YouTube channel
This will be followed by ‘Emerging and Evolving’ – A live conversation between the six artists, Kamala and Smita about their stories with world-renowned dance artist, Sooraj Subramaniam. It will be broadcast live from 7:30 pm on Nupur Arts Facebook Page and YouTube Channel.
Artists featured: Jasmine Man, Kavya Iyer Ramalingam, Divija Melally, Durga Tilak, Shriya Sharma and Hiten Mistry.
Each artist’s solo work tells a personal story that is both thought-provoking and beautiful to watch.
Jasmine’s piece questions identity and mixed heritage; Kavya’s explores a woman’s identity other than in relation to a man; Divija’s work talks about borders and whether they really do exist?; Durga’s piece based on her own poetry manifests sadness in a metaphorical way; Shriya expresses the dichotomy of the world and how we are always torn to make choices; Hiten explores the profound mind.
About Project Emerge: Emerge is an artist development and mentorship program initiated by Leicester-based Nupur Arts Dance Academy where six selected South Asian and Contemporary dance artists get the opportunity to work with multi-disciplinary dancer and choreographer, Kamala Devam and create their own solo works whilst developing their unique choreographic voices and creative methods. Additionally, this program also provides the artists overall professional development by providing one to one sessions with industry professionals in the fields of lighting design, photography and videography and each artist is offered a bursary of £500 towards expenses.
Supported by Arts Council England and Curve Theatre, Leicester.
